A Carlisle caravan park is preparing to reopen and is hoping to capitalise on an expected boom in staycations.

Experts are predicting that holidays within the UK will be the biggest travel trend in 2021 and concerns over foreign travel this year are likely to lead to a surge in people looking for breaks closer at home this year.

Green Acres Caravan Park, at Houghton near Carlisle, is one such location looking to capitalise, having lost most of this year’s summer season already.

Mike and Josie Brown took over Green Acres at the start of 2019, becoming the third generation of the Brown family to run the park. Having not been able to welcome back their regulars or newcomers at all this summer, they hope to see them all in 2021.

Josie says: “We are hoping to be able to open to some degree in July, but it will initially be without our shower and toilet facilities. We sadly won’t be able to accommodate guests who don’t have their own facilities but we will be reassessing this as the season goes on.

“It is looking more and more likely that we will have to wait until 2021 to be fully open and back up and running properly.

“We would like anyone who is planning out their holidays from April next year to consider staying with us.”

Part of the Tranquil Parks group, Green Acres is adults only and pet-friendly, aiming to attract people looking for a peaceful break or a touring base for visiting Hadrian’s Wall, The Lake District, Scotland, and the city of Carlisle itself.

Since closing at the end of October, the Brown family have been busy expanding the site and building a new toilet and shower block to add to the existing facilities.

The new state-of-the-art building will have six luxury wet rooms, including an easily accessible one, separate male and female toilets and an indoor washing up area.

“Since we closed for the winter at the end of October, we’ve been working on new facilities such as a shower block,” Josie continues. “These were the things most requested by our visitors, so we used the break to finally get it done. We also got planning permission to expand and build some new pitches.

“It’s been really hard not being able to welcome guests, and it means we’ve had no income at all during this time. So we hope that people will be looking to holiday in the UK and support some local businesses.

“A lot of people who are heading to Scotland to go camping or drive the North Coast 500 route use us as a stop-over on the way up, and they come back to us on the way back down.

“We’re very close to the motorway, but you can’t hear it at all – people always remark upon how quiet and relaxed it is here. We’re adults only and pet-friendly, so people come here to get away from it all.”
